Pavilion
The Japan Pavilion at EXPO 2020 presented a narrative centred on the relationship between technology, people and ideas. Reflecting Japan’s identity, the exhibition combined tradition and innovation, showcasing how cultural heritage and technological advancement can coexist and shape the future.
Visitors were guided through a sequence of immersive environments exploring themes such as nature, culture and innovation. The experience moved from introductory landscapes and cultural references to more advanced concepts, including future cities, the environment and scientific development. The journey concluded in a circular immersive space symbolising the connection and exchange of ideas, followed by a preview of EXPO 2025 in Osaka.
The pavilion combined spatial design, projection, sound and interactive elements to create a cohesive and evolving visitor experience.

BeWunder delivered the audio, video and lighting systems across the pavilion, ensuring the integration of all technical systems throughout the exhibition.
The installation supported multiple immersive zones, including projection-based environments, layered visual elements and synchronised lighting and sound across the visitor journey. Particular attention was given to the coordination of transitions between zones, ensuring that audiovisual elements operated seamlessly as visitors moved through the space.
A key feature of the project was the projection onto a large spherical surface within one of the final zones. This required detailed calibration and alignment to achieve accurate visual output across a complex geometry, while maintaining consistency under varying environmental conditions.
The delivery required close coordination with multiple stakeholders and careful system integration to ensure that all technical elements functioned together reliably and supported the overall narrative of the pavilion.
